‘A Repentant Catholic’ is an exploration into the heart of Catholic theology as a way of assenting into the Catholic faith.
Though I was baptized Catholic as a baby and enjoyed a personal relationship with Jesus as a child and teenager, my faith has been tested as an adult. Part of the problem was disillusionment and discouragement involved with the challenges of becoming an adult. I was rudely awakened to how dysfunctional the world can be. I was rudely awakened to how dysfunctional I can be. I lost my trust that God had the power to straighten out this dysfunction. God was not who I wanted Him to be. If He was, we – both as individuals but also as the human race – wouldn’t be so broken.
However another major problem was my own ignorance of the richness of Catholic theology itself, and the profound truths it has about Christ coming to redeem a rather dysfunctional world. Starting with how Christ can enter into, and heal, my own dysfunction.
I am academically trained to appreciate good literature reviews. Therefore this blog is a haphazard review of different theological books on Catholocism. It is my hope that this intellectual exploration of Catholic theology will help me overcome my many misunderstandings about God. To finally understand, and appreciate, who God has revealed Himself to be. And through getting to know Him, develop a genuine, trusting, and loving relationship with Him.
What does it mean to “Repent, and believe the Good News” (Mark 1:15)? This is the question I hope to answer here.
Reasons to hope
“We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.”
1 John 4:16
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
John 6: 68
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love.”
1 John 4:18
“Take courage; the time is near for God to heal you; take courage.”
Tobit 5: 10
